How to Buy a Notebook Computer

Looking to buy a notebook computer? Whether it is for yourself or for someone special, there are certain questions you will need to ask in order to choose the right one.

1. How big/small do you want it to be? This is actually a tougher question than it sounds, because there are good arguments for both sides. You may want it bigger, because then the screen in bigger and you can see in more detail. Some people are just uncomfortable looking at a 11″ screen.

But, you also need to think about portability. Are you going to be bringing this to work or school daily? Or just use it around the house every once in while? Do you have a bad back and need something light? These are things you need to consider. Notebook computers range from 5lbs to 12lbs. Pick them up in the store and see what weight feels comfortable to you.

2. What will you be using it for? This is an important question to ask, because your use of the notebook computer will determine what sort of system you need inside of it. For example, if you play lots of video games or do a lot of video/photo editing, then you should probably get a higher end video/graphics card. If all you do is surf the net and use Microsoft Office, than you can use a cheap video/graphics card.

3. Where will you be taking it? This is important to think about in terms of wireless and power. Will you be using the notebook computer in lots of places that don’t have power outlets? If so, you may want to get an extra battery to carry with you, or to put into an empty port. Will you need internet? If so, will you always be near someplace with wi-fi (in a hotel, Panera Bread, schools, etc)? If not, you may want to figure out a way to bring wireless with you. This is not nearly as hard as it sounds. You can get a drive from your cell phone carrier which will give you wi-fi everywhere, or you can choose to tether your cell phone to your computer giving yu a high speed internet at your whim.

4. What features do you want/need? Many notebook computers today come with such features as a web-cam, microphone, biometrics. If you think these are things you want, be sure any you look at has them included.

These are some great questions to start out with when you are looking to buy a notebook computer. When you are looking, you may come up with more of your own questions. Keep a list of all of things that you want/need in your notebook computer so that you end up with the perfect one!
